Devils' Tower it occurred to me is the reminiscence the prettified stump of an ancient tree. Tree that reached into the sky, much larger then even the most majestic redwood trees we know today. Everything was huge even the birds in that mystical world. Take a look at Devils' Tower doesn't it look like a tree stump?
